In this course, you will learn how the tourism industry operates and works within New Zealand and globally. In 2023, the total economic contribution of Travel & Tourism was nearly $10 trillion, representing 9.1% of global GDP. This demonstrates the sector's significant role in the global economy and its contribution to job creation, supporting nearly 330 million jobs worldwide.
This course is a great option if you're interested in the tourism business, marketing, hospitality, hotel management, event planning or customer service.
What should I already know?
You should have Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy and feel confident undertaking independent research reports.

Tourism studies is a Unit Standard course and focuses on real-world skills that support a wide range of skilled jobs across the tourism industry which is a vital sector for New Zealand's economy, significantly contributing to its GDP, employment, and export earnings.For example, tourism generated $17.0 billion in direct value added to the economy, representing 4.4% of New Zealand's GDP. Furthermore, tourism indirectly supported an additional $11.7 billion in economic activity, bringing the total contribution to 7.5% of GDP. The industry also directly and indirectly supports a substantial number of jobs, totalling 303,420, which is 10.7% of the country's total employment.
The purpose of learning is to explore and understand how TAU markets the Auckland Region to the World, attracting major events such as the Rugby World Cup, Cruise Ships, economic forums, as well as key business and cultural opportunities like the Lantern Festival and Diwali festival.
This field trip is a fantastic additional opportunity to support the authentic environment of the Tourism Sector and Industry.

The purpose of learning beyond the classroom is to discover and experience how tourism development and industry have shaped Rotorua's natural and cultural environment through field investigations and guest speakers. Rotorua is a major tourist destination in New Zealand.
This field trip is a fantastic additional opportunity to support learning of all facets of the tourism industry in an authentic environment.
