Tikanga
INTRODUCTION:
Kia tau ngā manaakitanga a te mea ngaro
ki runga ki tēnā ki tena o tātou
Kia mahea te hua mākihikihi
Kia toi te kupu, toi te mana, toi te aroha, toi te Reo Māori
Kia tūturu kia whakamau kia tīna, Tīna!!
Haumie, Hui e, Taiki e!!
Let the strength and life force of our ancestors be with each and every one of us
Freeing our path from obstruction
So that our words, spiritual power, love and language are upheld
Permanently fixed, established and understood, Forward together!
What is Yr11 Tikanga?
Tikanga unit standards focus on learners understanding the importance of tikanga values, processes and practices that are used by Māori.
These learnings contribute to further understanding of the Māori World that are outside the scope of our current Ter Reo Māori (TRM) curriculum.
The subject is an opportunity for akonga (students) to learn in depth about the uniqueness of the Māori World and how it contributes to the defining of this nation on the global landscape.
What should I already have achieved?
Akonga (students) do not need any formal qualifications or experience(s) prior to the beginning of the class. Whilst it is an advantage for the student to have some knowledge of Tikanga Māori, passion for the topic and an interest in aspects of the traditional Māori World is also important.
What will you learn in the Tikanga Class?
Study in Tikanga Kaupapa allows akonga (students) to investigate key aspects of the Māori World and how and where they can find a place in our contemporary world

The course will be assessed by students completing independent studies guided by the kaiako (teacher). Akonga (students) will participate in discussions and read view a variety of visual, written and online texts to gain knowledge and understanding of Tikanga Maori and its relevance to our contemporary and historical mātauranga
Are there any further assessment opportunities?
It is not expected that akonga will need further assessment opportunities because the assessment bundle is extensive and the sytudents may only have enough class contact time in Semester 2 to study only a few of the assessments available.
What are the course costs?
Apart from some stationery costs, course costs for this subject will be minimal.
