Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space, and time.
Statistics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in data.
These two disciplines are related, but have different ways of thinking and of solving problems. Both will equip students with effective means for investigating, interpreting, explaining, and making sense of the world in which they live in.
This course is designed to develop students’ mathematical reasoning through Number, Measurement, Linear algebra, Algebra, and Statistical skills. Students will also develop insight on making good statistical estimates and developing probability concepts needed for future career choices.
MAT1 students are team taught in a general course so that they can choose between a future Calculus pathway or a future Statistics pathway at NCEA Level 2 and Level 3.
In semester 1, the focus was Statistics needed for future STA2 courses and STA3 courses. The learning is needed for future Business, Medical, Finance, Nursing and other related careers
In Semester 2, the focus is on Algebra Success in Algebra will lead to a MAT2 pathway at Level 2 and then into a CAL3 pathway at Level 3. Calculus is needed for future Engineering, Architecture and related courses
