Welcome to the Te Reo Māori class. The principal expectation is to improve your knowledge and understanding of the important aspects of Te Reo Māori. Enjoy your journey this year as you develop your language skill in this subject.

Introduction :

(i) The Year 12, NCEA L2 Te Reo Māori class is conducted over the entire 2024 year. Classes are timetabled for :

(ii) Students are expected to attend all classes during the year

(iii) The class will be taught by Matua Willie Ropata

(iv) It is expected all internals will be completed by the middle of Term3 to ensure sufficient preparation time is available for exam preparation

What will I learn?

This course is designed to support students to continue to access and develop their understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand's indigenous language, Te Reo Māori and continue their journey from Yr 11. Students will  extend their learning, prepare for externals at the end of the year and participate in a number of exercises and challenges to improve their understanding of the Te Reo Māori language and also some of the traditional practices associated with the Māori world. These include

How will this course be assessed? 

a) By the end of the year, students should be able to recite their pēpeha, kawai rangatira and more complex mihi. They should have a cache of Te Reo Māori vocabulary that they will find useful in everyday settings. They will have an understanding of Te Reo Māori grammatical structures and be able to compose basic stories fit for publication.

Students will be learning about the Māori concept of  'Taonga'. They will be making a taonga of their own as part of the study. This includes researching important elements of Taonga and sharing their research findings in ways that meet the requirements of the subject.

b) This course also consists of a maximum of five assessments which will be assessed at NCEA Level 2 with three  Internal Standards and two external exam standards which are supported by NZQA :
