Yr13 Transition Day

Hello Year 13 students - You’re leaving school this year! To prepare you for this next chapter in your life, we are having a Flex day called TRANSITION DAY on Thursday 18 June.

On Transition Day you will have a Learning Guide for the day, a “preparing for leaving school” checklist, and workshops from external speakers, preparing you for work or study in the future. You will also have a simulated job interview (see below).

You’ll learn about: 

• Studylink: Student Loans and Allowances

• Employment skills & expectations

• Searching for and applying for jobs

• Curriculum Vitae (CV) preparation

• Job interview skills

• Banking, loans, money management

• Personal presentation at work

• Social Media safety for employment

• Registering to vote in NZ

The day finishes with a fun opportunity to practice an essential skill: 

Applying for a simulated job, and a mock job interview with your LA or another teacher. You will be “graded” on this and given feedback to develop your interview skills for real jobs.

There is an important piece of preparation you need to do BEFORE next thursday:

1. Read and pick ONE of the three simulated jobs we have created for your transition day

2. Create or Update your CV by either:

   • Updating career central’s ABOUT ME info you completed in year 11 and using their automated CV generator (10 min - creates a basic CV, you will probably want to modernise or make it pretty, which would take you 30 min+) OR

   • Using the CV template and guide supplied by careers (30 min) OR

   • Using another online tool or site such as Zeil or Canva to create a CV (30 min+)

3. Write a short application letter for the fake job; address it to your LA, as they are most likely to be your interviewer on the day*. A guide and example is supplied here. 

4. Email your CV and application to your LA BEFORE Transition Day next Thursday

5. Pick your outfit for Transition Day! 

   • Transition day is a non-uniform day where you come dressed appropriately and ready for a job interview for the job you are applying for. You will be given feedback on your outfit appropriateness and choice in your interview.

* Some LAs may be unavailable on the day or have more year 13 students than they can interview on the day; Don’t panic! You’ll still get feedback. In this situation, you may be interviewed by another teacher.
