What should I already have achieved?
Whilst it is an advantage for aakonga to have had some kapahaka experience, it is not a prerequisite for this course. A passion to learn and achieve within a Te Ao Māori context is the only recommendation.
What will you learn in L2 Te Ao Haka?
Students will learn about the features, elements and discipline/s of Kapahaka and develop both a practical and theoretical understanding of:
Composition and composers
Historical contexts of kapahaka performance
Social and political commentary via kapahaka performance
Whakapapa, history and Te Reo Māori me ōna tīkanga.
Traditional and contemporary Māori culture and Māori Performing Arts
How will the course be assessed?
The course offers the flexibility for both practical and theoretical assessment to take place in a variety of learning environments including the classroom, ASB PolyFest, OSC Oceania, OSC International Week, Ahurea Te Tino Rangatiratanga, other community events.
Are there any further assessment opportunities?
ASB PolyFest in term 1 is the first assessment opportunity for US22756 Perform a bracket and AS91981 Perform a Te Ao Haka item to respond to a local kaupapa.
Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga in term 4 is a further opportunity for the above standards to be assessed.
