Level 2 English is designed to help you meet the University Entrance (UE) literacy requirement of 10 credits, made up of 5 reading and 5 writing credits. The programme supports you to achieve all of these, as well as aim for 17 or more Level 2 credits overall.
In this course, you will develop the ability to recognise and understand connections between a range of texts, including novels, short stories, articles, poetry, films, and visual images. You will analyse ideas and perspectives within these texts and show your understanding by creating your own written and oral responses.
You will also build your skills in writing, speaking, and presenting, including seminars and research tasks, while learning to write clearly, fluently, and with control.
Assessment includes three internal achievement standards worth 13 credits, as well as a compulsory external exam worth 4 credits, which contributes to your UE literacy requirement.

These skills are important for careers in areas such as journalism, media, law, education, business, and marketing, where clear writing, speaking, and understanding different perspectives are essential. They are also useful in creative fields like film, writing, and content creation, where storytelling and audience awareness are key.
Additionally, strong literacy skills are required in most jobs and are a foundation for further study at Level 3 and university.
Overall, Level 2 English helps build the ability to communicate ideas effectively, understand complex information, and think critically—skills that are useful in almost any career.
