English 1 builds a strong foundation in reading and writing through the NCEA Literacy Co-requisite (CAA) and Level 1 English units. You will develop your ability to interpret and connect ideas within and across a range of texts from different contexts.
You will learn to identify and understand how language features are used for different purposes and audiences, and how writers use structure, point of view, and language techniques to shape meaning. The course encourages you to read widely through a year-long personal reading programme and to form thoughtful, well-supported interpretations of increasingly complex texts.
You will also develop your ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively by using a range of language features for different purposes. Through drafting and feedback, you will learn how to refine your work to improve clarity, meaning, and impact.
In addition, you will explore how your own identity influences your responses to texts and develop the confidence to express and justify your personal perspectives.
