All students opting into this course will be given a quick induction tutorial on how to manage their own learning online. What should I have already achieved?
  • 14 credits in Level 1 Science, including 4 credits from the External AS 90948 - Genetic Variation 
  • Level 1 Literacy.
Some students may apply for alternative entry - this will be at the discretion of the teacher in charge of the course and in consultation with the LA.
What will I learn?
The key aspects of biology studied in this course are Ecology, Cell Biology and Genetics.

During the first half of Term 1, students will learn about community patterns in a local community, and  will have the opportunity to develop their ecology field study skills out in Tiri Tiri Matangi Island. 

The key focus for the remainder of Term 1 and all of Term 2 will be Life Processes at the Cellular level. During this time, students will be required to complete a practical investigation involving osmosis followed by an end of topic test. 

During Terms 3 and 4, students will cover aspects of population and molecular genetics, which include how genetic change occurs within a population, implications of genetic variation, how proteins are synthesised and the effects of the environment on both phenotype and genotype.

Ultimately, the course is designed specifically for students planning to carry on with their studies in Biology Level 3. The course provides students with the core and fundamental skills for a Science/Biology pathway in further tertiary studies at Universities, or Polytechnic Institutions.

How will this course be assessed?

This course contains 8 Internal credits and 12 external credits. This will provide you with the opportunity to gain a total of 20 credits from this course. 

The course has been well structured to provide students with a varied range of assessment opportunities, such as report writing & practical investigations skills, as well as completing written assessments under examination conditions. These skills will be further developed in the Level 3 Biology course. 

Both internals offered will assess different skills, and it is important that you pay attention and get as much feedback from your teachers as possible, during formative assessments, to ensure you succeed. 

To continue on with Level 3 Biology, students will require 14 credits from Level 2 Biology, part of which must come from AS 2.5 - Genetic Variation & Change.
  
All decisions about your choice of standards must be made following a discussion with your teacher and your LA to ensure the implications for future course selection and career pathways are well understood.
Will there be any FAO?  (Further Assessment Opportunities)
There will be NO Further Assessment Opportunities for any of the internal standards offered for this course in 2017. 
It is advised that you make full use of your itimes, formative/practice assessments, and feedback from your teacher, to ensure you are prepared for the internal standards. 
This will help you to achieve the best grade possible.
Are there any Pre-requisites for L3 Biology?
14 credits in L2 Biology, part of which, 4 credits must come from:
AS 91157 - Demonstrate understanding of Genetic Variation & Change.
OR 
In consultation with the Curriculum Leader, Teacher in Charge and the Learning Advisor.
