BUS1 Course Outline 2018 Level 1 Year Planner

The following achievement standards will be offered to students completing Level 1 Business Studies. Please note that in Term 1 , Week 8 you will participate in Oceania Week to experience a market day and to raise capital to develop your "actual" business product to be sold during Market Day in Term 2. Products not permitted to be sold at Level 1 in Term 2 include food and beverages. Further details on Oceania Evening and Market day and field trips will be advised in class.

What should I have already achieved?

An interest in how business works and a willingness to get involved. An appreciation of how to work as part of a group and a desire to do your best.
What will I learn?
Business Studies explores the skills, knowledge and understanding needed in order to be involved in

business. At first it may seem straightforward as a business essentially provides a good or service

that meets the needs of customers, but there are a lot of skills needed to be successful in business.

These skills include

Planning and goal setting
Market research and analysis
Time management and organisation
Marketing and promotion
Pricing and selling
Financial management

Students who study Business Studies will learn how to be enterprising through practice. Every student

will be involved in running their own business and selling a product or service to customers. In addition to the practical experience students will investigate actual New Zealand business to try to understand what

they have to do to be successful.

How will this course be assessed?
Learning in Business Studies will be assessed through both internal and external achievement
standards.

You have the opportunity to gain a potential of 17 credits in Business Studies. This will consist of 9 Internal Assessments credits and 8 External Assessment credits.

The learning focus is on learning the skills that are needed to effectively plan for and carry out a
business activity. The business activity achievement standard (AS90842) and internal features (AS90837) is compulsory for all students, but
then, in consultation with the teacher, students will have the opportunity to choose the other standards
they enter with the expectation of a minimum of 14 credits.

Are there any Pre-requisite for Level 2 Business Studies
Preferably 10 credits in Level 1 Business Studies but it is open to any students who have achieved
NCEA Level 1 Literacy

What are the course costs? Estimated cost of between $50 to $100 invest in your own business team product, $35 for a Class Trip to Spookers and $25 for a Class Trip to Extreme Edge Indoor Rock Climbing. Subject fee = $10
