What will I learn?

Level 1 Media Studies is about SCREENAGERS; looking at how young people use and are used by the media. What media do teens consume and how do they consume it? What are the effects of their media use? What do teens look like in the media - is their world shown accurately, and how is it shown? Why do we have age restrictions on certain media? Students learn basics of technical video production, and produce a video of relevance to teen issues.

Term 1 is an introduction to Media Studies, and the 3 different strands of Media Studies: study of the media, study of society, and production skills.  Students conduct an in-depth analysis of their own and others' media use, and look at the portrayal of teens and teen interests in the film.  Term 2 looks at the rules around Media content and issues around censorship in NZ and overseas, and a study into how to plan a polished media production. In term 3, students produce a music video with a story relevant to teenagers, and prepare for exams.   In term 4, there is an optional study into media techniques, and exam preparation.
