Pathways and Careers Portfolio (Year 11-13)

Developing your careers and pathways plan is an important skill in a senior secondary school environment. In undertaking this learning programme, you will  have activities to complete with your LA, with your parents and on your own. You will develop your skills in the Student Career Management Competencies

Five vocational pathways have been developed and are designed to improve the relevance of learning for you by indicating how your learning and achievement is valued by broad sectors of the workforce. The five vocational pathways are:
Each pathway also comes with recognised assessment standards that have been recommended by industries across the sector. Investigating the pathways as well as the links between skills and competencies across them is one way of planning for your future success.

Planning your own pathway through senior secondary school can help you match your strengths to the type of industries that value your skills, as well as develop a broader understanding of skills that readily transfer across sectors.  It is also relevant to consider the current Occupation Outlook when exploring your possible pathways.

The Pathways and Careers Portfolio course at Ormiston Senior College consists of:

YOUR PORTFOLIO:

Your Pathways and Careers Portfolio is a combination of resources and activities (discussions, attendance at events, online investigations and written worksheets) designed to give you the skills and knowledge to understand:
    • Who you are and how you operate best
    • The possibilities and opportunities available in the future
    • The realities and practicalities of study, training and work in New Zealand
    • Processes for making decisions and planning for your future
Your portfolio is assessed based on your understanding of the resources and completion of the activities. All necessary elements must be signed-off by your teacher.

As a 'rule of thumb' one NCEA credit equates to approximately 10 hours of learning. So, your portfolio is a commitment of about 3 hours each week during Term 1, 2 and 3 if you intend to be assessed against all 10 credits. You may choose to complete less learning and be assessed against fewer than all 10 credits. Year 11 students, for example, may choose to learn the skills and be assessed against US 12383 and US 7121 in order to balance their workload. Year 13 students, for example, may aim only to complete the learning for the two Level 3 credits involved with US 4251.
