What should I have already achieved?
An interest in how business works and a willingness to get involved. An appreciation of how to work as part of a group and a desire to do your best.
What will I learn?
Business Studies explores the skills, knowledge and understanding needed in order to be involved in business. At first it may seem straightforward as a business essentially provides a good or service that meets the needs of customers, but there are a lot of skills needed to be successful in business. These skills include
  • Planning and goal setting
  • Market research and analysis
  • Time management and organisation
  • Marketing and promotion
  • Pricing and selling
  • Financial management

Students who study Business Studies will learn how to be enterprising through practice. Every student will be involved in running their own business and selling a product or service to customers. In addition to the practical experience students will investigate actual New Zealand business to try to understand what they have to do to be successful.

How will this course be assessed?
Learning in Business Studies will be assessed through both internal and external achievement standards. The focus is on learning the skills that are needed to effectively plan for and carry out a business activity. The business activity achievement standard (90842) is compulsory for all students, but then, in consultation with the teacher, students will have the opportunity to chose the other standards they enter with the expectation of a minimum of 14 credits.
